"There's a muffin in his cereal!"

In celebration of our 5th wedding anniversary, we left Saturday for Colonial Williamsburg - a nearly 600 mile trip. Tim gave me a budget for our vacation and not only was I able to stay within the constraints but I also found a hotel that permitted dogs so we saved money on not having to board Duch.

As seen here, Duchess was very excited to go, little did she know she'd be spending a lot of time in the hotel room by herself.



Feeling like we had stepped back in time, Tim and I took two days to tour Colonial Williamsburg and hit the main sites of the colonial town. Being there around the time that America declared its independence a couple hundred years ago, Colonial Williamsburg became a revolutionary city and the daily programs differed from other times of the year. Unfortunately for us, this didn't work out quite like we had expected, as we wanted to see both Patrick Henry's and Thomas Jefferson's monologues but neither programs were scheduled due to the special revolutionary programs.

Our favorite tour was Bassett Hall, the Rockefeller's modest home used 6 weeks out of the year.



Another fascinating tour and good history lesson was the Capital Building.



We also toured the Governor's Palace,



the Magazine and Guardhouse,



the shoe shop, the saddlemaker, and so much more. In the afternoon of the second day, we stepped back even further in time and toured Jamestown Settlement, located a few miles from Colonial Williamsburg.

By no means were the 3 ships used to cross the ocean very big; for example, the Susan Constant, as pictured here, offered very little space for the 70+ men that made the 4 1/2 month voyage.






A few pointers for visiting Williamsburg, VA:

1.) if you go to Colonial Williamsburg wear comfortable shoes b/c you will walk and walk and walk.

2.) make sure to see Jamestown - an afternoon is all it takes.

3.) if tired of historic sightseeing, there is a large outlet mall about 15 minutes from downtown.
